The Ebro River is known for its massive carp & catfish, but an incredible amount of variables can affect our ability to fish. Whether it is freak storms, algae blooms, water temperatures, or any number of other circumstances, one thing that makes my life as a fishing guide nearly impossible is when they open the dam's floodgates and purge the system. Although I understand the necessity, it forces me to think outside the box and rely heavily on my years of knowledge and experience. This past spring was one such time. With a client due to come out and the river in full flood with multiple dams wide open working in tandem to push through the huge amount of winter meltwater from its base into the delta. This is not unusual. in fact, it is quite common during this time of year making the bulk of the river completely unfishable. I, however, have had a few spots in my back pocket just for this occasion. With Barry, our client, at our doorstep, I loaded up my beat-up old Nissan Terrano and we set off in search of a swim. My mate Darren joined me for a session on the Ebro this past week. We thought we would try a bit of carp fishing back at my special swim as the carp have shown some signs of life and this spot has always seemed to bring on the big ones as this is where I had caught my p.b carp at 58lbs just a few months back. This turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life as the week was absolute mayhem with the carp showing up in droves with between 50-60 carp coming out one after another but the absolute highlight of the entire session was indeed this incredible 76lb 14oz mirror caught by Darren. I could not help myself but get a photo of me holding this mammoth mirror dreaming of the day when it is my turn at breaking an Ebro record.

Happy New year to everyone! We hope everyone has had a great holiday, For one client, at least it has been a dream come true. Timmy Cochrane, who had a stunning 46 Ebro Mirror on Boxing day a few years back (Before Covid), had come back this Christmas hoping for another Christmas miracle this time around. At first, it had been tough going as the Christmas carp were not playing ball above the dam. He had five fish in the low 30s over the first 6 days but we were after something much bigger so when weed started to come threw the swim we did not need a twisted arm to move to a new area. I had been baiting up a swim just below the bridge just in case and the move soon paid off as he soon had 4 or 5 runs up to 36lbs. We took this as a good sign so with Father Christmas (My Dad) himself by his side he settled in with the visions of monster Ebro carp dancing in his head. It didn't take long as soon the Christmas bells started to ring like a choir of angels and after an incredible battle, a 50lbs 12oz graced his net only 48 hours after moving to the new swim. It was Joy to the world! All caught on a single yellow boilie, Mandi's homemade specials doing the trick again. Rhys just had a week to remember on the Ebro, with a brace of Ebro mirrors one after the other. A number of commons topped by 39lbs 8oz and a 136lb catfish. Had a mad sessions the past few weeks with rain, hail, winds and thunderstorms. Managed to pull a few out with cats to 140lbs and carp to 37lbs.
